Our Mission is to generate development knowledge, promote debate and encourage the utilization of research findings in postgraduate teaching and training and in shaping the growth of development thinking, theory and practice with particular focus on Africa.

The Institute takes pride in being the oldest Institute for Development Studies out of 2 such institutes in Mali.
Community Engagement
BIRDs builds reciprocal, trust-based partnerships with local communities to exchange knowledge, address societal needs, and enhance research and education. Our key strategies include service-learning, participatory research, volunteering, and collaborative projects that create sustainable, equitable relationships rather than just one-way outreach

We focus on providing evidence-based research, policy advisory, capacity building, and evaluations to address development challenges
