The purpose of BIRDs is to undertake research for development studies in Africa. It aims to be a leading centre for excellence in African research, statistics and planning.

To achieve its goal, BIRDs offers short courses and consultancies on Research methods, project management, planning and management, data science, artificial intelligence and research ethics, scientific writing, English, and French.

BIRD Press was established in 2018 as a publisher of the Institute.
